Pitch Madness #9 – Ashlyn and “Skin Deep”

1. Let's hear your pitch.
Seventeen-year-old Zoe’s found the girl of her dreams—if she can ignore the fur and fangs. When the child-killing demon that cursed Isabella attacks them, they must outwit it if they’re going to survive.

2. Who is your target audience? What genre is your book?
Young Adult contemporary Fantasy

3. How did this story come about? Who or what inspired you/this story?
I was watching the 3D re-release of Beauty and the Beast in theaters, and the idea came to mind. I’d been writing little one-shots for a TV show I liked, focused on my favorite couple, so the idea started as a fanfic that eventually grew into a novel.

4. Is this your first book?
No, third.

5. Why did you enter #PitchMadness?
Why does anyone enter? In the hopes of getting an agent. Other goals include making more writer friends, of course.

6. Do you have any past experiences with this story you would like to share?
I love Brenda Drake’s contests. They have such good communities. I even started a support chatroom to go with the contests.

7. What can we expect from your story in the future, do you have any plans?
Well, I don’t plan on any sequels, so nothing ‘futurey’. You can expect girls in love, friendships, and curses.

8. Can we hear an excerpt?
How about Zoe’s first meeting with Isabella?

Floorboards creak, sending my pulse racing. “Hello?”
There’s no answer. Someone shuffles slowly around the room. My heart rams against my rib cage, and I clench the blankets. “I said, hello.” Still no reply. Someone’s shy—or trying to sneak up on me with a butcher knife. I tighten my grip. Fuck that, I can throw a punch if I have to. Close fist and aim at face. Easy.
There’s more shuffling. Okay, considering this person isn’t making much of an effort to be quiet, they probably aren’t going to do that. I hope. I slide on hand off the blanket, leaving it balled by my side in case I need it. “I can hear you moving around, so don’t pretend you’re not here.”
“Very well,” says a feminine voice, raspy and deep. I smile, my stomach lurching in relief. I breathe a sigh of relief that my rescuer is a girl. The alternative…Ryan flits through my mind again. I wrap my arms around my chest, shielding myself from both his memory and this unknown girl.
“I’m glad you’re awake,” she says. She’s happy because she was worried, or because she’s working with Ryan? I doubt it’s the latter, since I’m not restrained. Then again, I don’t know if he’s crazy enough for that.
“Me too.” I want to say something else, but nothing seems appropriate. Hopefully she’s called the police, and they’ll be here soon.
Almost a minute passes before she speaks, the only sound filling the silence is our breathing. “How’s your head?” she asks at last.

9. Have a website or social media platform for your story?
10. So, fur and fangs. Does this have were-elements, or is this an idea of your own design?
It’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, so it is curse related.

11. Alright. You also mention girls in love. Are you an LGBT author/writer? You said no sequels so curious if this is a first or part of a collection.
Yes, I am. As of now, I have no immediate plans to write another fairytale retelling. I have several other projects I am working on.
